Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) announced on Oct. 31 that it has succeeded in loading a high manganese steel LNG fuel tank into a dual fuel-powered container carrier for the first time in the world.

The company mounted a square-shaped high manganese steel LNG tank inside a 24,000-TEU container ship.

High manganese steel is a material for cargo holds and fuel tanks that can withstand liquefied natural gas at a cryogenic temperature of minus 163 °C. It is attracting attention as a next-generation material for LNG cargo holds as its price is lower than those of nickel alloy steel, aluminum or stainless steel, and it shows high strength and abrasion resistance as well as an excellent performance at cryogenic temperatures.

DSME has recently succeeded in developing an LNG fuel tank made of high manganese steel for cryogenic use through joint R&D activities with POSCO for over 10 years. In October, it held a christening ceremony for two LNG-powered super-large crude oil carriers.
